GORHAM — Students at Narragansett Elementary School were evacuated Wednesday morning after a gas leak was detected, according to school officials.

The leak, which came from a small rooftop air handler, stemmed from a faulty valve in a gas regulator, Superintendent Heather Perry said.

Principal Erin Eppler said in a message to families late Wednesday afternoon that the leak has been repaired, the building had been deemed safe and school will resume Thursday.

Gorham schools facilities director Norm Justice said the elementary school was evacuated around 11:10 a.m. after two reports of a smell of gas.

Firefighters were initially unable to find the odor’s source, and at one point, students were briefly taken back into the building, Justice said. But the small remained, so students were evacuated again and taken across Main Street to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Perry said in a statement.

School leaders and Gorham Fire Department officials agreed to dismiss the students for the day “out of an abundance of caution,” Perry said in the statement.

Perry said all students were safe. Many parents waited in a line of cars outside the church Tuesday afternoon to pick up their students.
