Brian Redmond Cullen
BRUNSWICK – Brian Redmond Cullen, born 29 December 1941, in Durban, South Africa, passed away peacefully, 25 October, 2025, surrounded by his family at the age of 83.
The third of six children to Henry and Patricia Cullen, Brian is survived by his remaining siblings Lorna, Marilyn and Stephen; his beloved wife, Elizabeth Jane; and his children Serena (Simon), Sarah (Michael), Robin, and Anna (Robert). He was an inspirational father to his children and grandfather to Vida, Sasha, Jake, Leo, Max, and Lexi.
Brian grew up on the beaches of Durban. He graduated from Christian Brothers College in Kimberly, South Africa where he was a champion boxer, swimmer and diver, and later earned a degree in Telecommunications. He and Jane met in London and married there in 1971, before moving back to South Africa. Brian built a successful career in software development that eventually brought him and his family to Brunswick, Maine in 1987.
Though his professional life was focused on technology, Brian came from a musical lineage and his first love was music. He started young as a drummer, eventually playing jazz and pipe drums. In London and Johannesburg he began a lifetime study of classical guitar, as a student, teacher and performer, and in South Africa, he founded the Durban Classical Guitar Society. A modern renaissance man, he was also an avid cyclist, swimmer, runner, a flautist, a singer, a philosopher and student of breathwork. He was a mentor and exemplary friend to his fellow musicians and athletes.
He will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, intelligence, independent spirit and inspirational energy, which was apparent to the very end. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3:15 p.m. at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011. A celebration will follow at 5:15 p.m. at Wild Oats Bakery.
