Louis “Lou” Alexander

SCARBOROUGH – Louis “Lou” Alexander was born Jan. 4, 1935, in Portland, to George and Alberta (Gaynor) Alexander. He grew up on Peaks Island and graduated from Portland High School in 1954.

Lou proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, with assignments across the U.S., in England, and two deployments to Vietnam. After his service, he worked for Northeast Air and Maine Medical Center. In retirement, he spent 25 years as a beloved Portland school crossing guide.

He was a lifelong member of Portland VFW Post #6859, serving as Post Commander, State Sergeant-at-Arms, and National Aide-de-Camp. He was also active in the American Legion and Portland Eagles Club.

Lou married Marion Fox on June 7, 1975. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage and traveled to 48 states, enjoying many winters in Florida.

He is survived by Marion; children George, Cindy (Mark), Louis Jr. (Antoinette), and James; stepchildren George, Edna, and Alfred (Christine); and many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Lou will be remembered for his service, kindness, and deep love for family.

Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a Catholic Prayer Service at 11 a.m. at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A graveside service will follow at New Calvary Cemetery in South Portland at 12:30 p.m.
