PORTLAND — Down two goals in the third period, the Maine Mariners rallied to tie the game, only for Wheeling’s Logan Pietila to score with 58 seconds left in overtime and give the Nailers a 5-4 win over the Mariners in ECHL action Sunday at Cross Insurance Arena.
Brooklyn Kalmikov scored two goals and Max Andreev and Ty Cheveldayoff one apiece for Maine, which saw its own two-goal lead evaporate in the second period when Wheeling’s Matthew Quercia and Max Graham scored to tie the game 2-2 after two periods.
Goals by Zach Gallant and former UMaine standout Nolan Renwick gave the Nailers a 4-2 lead in the third before the Mariners’ Kalmikov and Cheveldayoff scored to force OT.
The Mariners (2-1-1) are back home next Saturday against the Adirondack Thunder.
