Elizabeth Hasty Thompson
KENNEBUNK – Elizabeth Hasty Thompson, known as Liz or Bitsy to friends and family, passed away on Oct. 17, 2025, in Kennebunk, Maine. She was born on Jan. 31, 1947 in Windsor, Vt., the daughter of Elizabeth Moore Thompson and Julian Ray Thompson.
The oldest of three children, Liz developed an early curiosity for the world. She attended Bates College, following in the footsteps of both of her parents (class of 1942), as well as both of her grandfathers C. Ray Thompson (class of 1913), Ernest Moore (class of 1915), her grandmother Ruth Frost Moore (class of 1918) and her uncles Hasty Thompson (class of 1940) and Richard Thompson (class of 1941).
Although she often joked that she was the only Thompson to “flunk gym” at Bates, she accomplished her own impressive feats, working as the first female mail carrier in 50 years in Ilion, NY the summer before her junior year.
Liz graduated from Bates in 1969 and went on to dedicate more than four decades of service in the Central Intelligence Agency, specializing in foreign and domestic terrorism. Her career allowed her the opportunity to travel the world and experience a plethora of different cultures, something she was passionate about sharing.
Even after her retirement from the agency, Liz continued to work as a contractor for many years, with much of her time spent working in Africa.
Outside of her enigmatic and very secretive job, Liz’s life centered around her family. So much so that she purchased a 2-unit condo in Kennebunk Beach which allowed her to be close to her mother and her two younger brothers, as well as her beloved niece and nephew, when she wasn’t traveling.
Liz was soft-spoken but quick-witted, with a raunchy sense of humor that could make a grown man blush. She paid attention to and kept in touch with friends from all chapters of her life and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was centric in the planning and execution of holiday and birthday celebrations for her small but tight-knit family. She loved taking pictures and videos to forever document these moments. She enjoyed hosting guests at her Kennebunk beach condo and “beach-combing” for shells and sea-glass.
Liz was predeceased by her father, Julian in 1982 and her mother, Elizabeth in 2008. She is survived by her brother Jay Thompson and his wife Sharyn, her brother Stephen Thompson and sister-in-law Cyndy Thompson, and their children Katherine Thompson and Stephen Thompson.
Her family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the staff at Huntington Common and Gentivah Hospice, many of whom provided wonderful care to Liz over the years and for some months before her passing.
The family will have a private gathering and remembrance of Liz’s well-lived life at a future date.
For those of you who knew her, we ask that you take a few moments with a partner or friend and share memories of Liz that inevitably make you smile. She is on a new adventure, our hearts will always be with her, and we thank all those who had a good impact on her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Liz’s name to:
