SCARBOROUGH – Dennis Ray Peltier, born May 23, 1946 to Ernest and Dorothy (Slaathaug) Peltier, passed away on Oct. 17, 2025, with his loving daughter by his side.

Dennis was born in Hawthorne, Calif. and grew up in Lawndale and Desert Hot Springs. He later settled in Redlands where he raised his daughters. In his later years, Dennis moved to Maine where he was cared for by his daughter for the remainder of his life.

After high school, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a radioman during the Vietnam War, working on both ship and on land. While he rarely spoke openly about his experiences, they undoubtedly had a profound impact on him. In time, Dennis was able to share the pride he had for his service and acknowledge the sacrifices that he made.

Following his time in the navy, Dennis earned a Bachelor’s Degree in business from California Baptist College and became an elementary school teacher, following in the footsteps of his mother. As a teacher, Dennis left a lasting impact on countless students. He was known for his gentle approach and quick wit which allowed him to connect with his students and create a space where they felt seen and safe.

Dennis had a quiet love for animals, especially turtles and tortoises, which he cared for in a backyard sanctuary that once held more than twenty. In later years, Dennis’ constant companion was his dog Hercules who stayed by his side until he could no longer care for him. Dennis would often say that he could still feel “Herk” resting on his legs, a comforting reminder of their bond.

Dennis was known for his quiet and gentle nature, preferring the comfort of his own private space with his books and music. He was never one to seek attention, but was always ready with an unexpected and sometimes inappropriate joke. His greatest accomplishment was his family and he had no trouble bragging about his daughters and grandchildren. He was endlessly proud of them and everything they did.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents and his in-laws, Bob and Deloris Runnells, with whom he shared a special bond. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Roxanne Peltier of Missouri; two daughters, Nicole (Andrew) Housel of California and Stephanie (Ryan) Edwards of South Portland, Maine. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Abigail Housel, Haley, Brady, and Tyler Edwards; along with nieces, nephews; and many special friends and extended family that loved him dearly.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough and Gentiva Hospice for the exceptional care that they provided to Dennis over the last few years. They came to feel more like family and went above and beyond to care for and love Dennis.
