The Kennebunk Select Board is seeking applications for an interim RSU 21 school board director to replace Arianna Efstathiou, who resigned last week due to a move out of the district.
Interested candidates have until Tuesday, Oct. 28, to send in their applications, and a candidates night will take place on Nov. 13 if more than one candidate applies.
After a candidates night, the Select Board will choose one person to replace Efstathiou on the school board, and that person will serve until the next annual town election in June 2026.
“This is a nice way to dip your toe in if you’re on the fence about serving on the school board,” Select Board Chair Miriam Whitehouse said. “It’s a unique opportunity to try it out without committing to a three-year term.”
At the Oct. 14 Kennebunk Select Board meeting, the board discussed options for selecting an interim school board director.
For the most recent vacancy on the board, which occurred at the end of August when Lesley Stoeffler resigned, the town of Kennebunk advertised the position, receiving eight applications.
Three candidates participated in a candidates night on Sept. 16, and Wayne Sargent was ultimately chosen to replace Stoeffler.
Last week, Kennebunk Town Manager Bryan Laverriere said the Select Board had three options for selecting an interim director to replace Efstathiou: It could choose from the other two candidates that participated in candidates night last month; it could publicize to solicit applications for another candidates night; or it could solicit candidates and conduct a Select Board interview.
One board member, Leslie Trentalange, suggested the board publicize applications again to potentially receive a fresh slate of candidates.
Another board member, Kevin Therrien, agreed, noting that it “makes sense” to follow the clear process laid out in the last selection process.
“Those other candidates that might have withdrawn for other reasons last time might also want to come back into the candidate pool,” Therrien said. “I think we should offer that.”
The board also discussed the possibility of simply interviewing interested candidates, but ultimately decided to hold another candidates night.
Candidates have until the end of the day Tuesday, Oct. 28, to submit applications to the town.
