The Kennebunk Police Department is searching for an unidentified man in connection with an alleged theft that took place on Fletcher Street on Oct. 15. The man was seen pocketing about $7,400 in cash that he found lying on the road.
According to police, the owner of the cash had left the money on the roof of his car after a vehicle sale, and drove off without noticing the cash was still on the roof.
After returning home and realizing his mistake, the owner’s father allegedly went looking for the cash, and came upon a man picking it up from the road, near the Fletcher Street roundabout.
An interaction between the father and the suspect was captured on the father’s dash camera. In images from the dash camera, the father, wearing a plaid shirt, bends down to look at something next to the suspect, who appears to be wearing tan colored pants, a gray or blue jacket, and a baseball cap.
It is unclear if the father and the suspect spoke to each other during the interaction.
Police said the suspect headed westbound on Fletcher Street in a dark gray Honda CR-V.
Kennebunk Police Lt. Juliet Angis told the Press Herald that the suspect could face criminal charges for “theft of lost, mislaid, or mistakenly delivered property” if the money is not returned.
According to the Maine State Legislature, the theft is considered a Class C crime, meaning it is punishable by up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
“This case is currently under investigation,” Angis said. “The police hope that the unidentified male will do the right and moral thing by returning the money.”
Anyone who recognizes the suspect from the dash camera footage is asked to contact the Kennebunk Police Department at 985-2102, ext. 1608, or contact the anonymous tip line at 985-2102, ext. 1622.
“We continue to ask for the public’s assistance in identifying the male subject,” Angis said.
