The Brunswick Town Council on Monday approved $2 million to purchase 8.5 acres and a 10,000-square-foot building from a local church. The town plans on using the property as a new home base for the Parks and Recreation Department.

The property, located at 2 Columbus Drive, is owned by Pathway Vineyard Church. The church recently bought the former Regal Cinemas in Cook’s Corner, which it is converting into its new worship space.

The town has been considering moving the Parks Department’s main facility from Edwards Field for about a decade.

Edwards Field is “undersized and inadequate” to continue to serve the Parks Department, Town Manager Julia Henze said. The unpaved parking lot at Edwards Field has also been increasingly used by parents and students at the nearby Kate Furbish Elementary School, creating traffic conflicts with the Parks Department.

The Pathway Vineyard Church property includes a one-story building, a detached garage, several playground areas, a pavilion, multipurpose field and a paved parking area, making it a “suitable, move-in ready space” for Parks and Recreation, Henze said.

Councilors agreed to the purchase unanimously Monday night.

“This is an opportunity we just can’t ignore,” said District 2 Councilor James Ecker.

Nathaniel Shed, District 6 councilor, suggested the town could eventually consider renting out the event space in the Columbus Drive building.

In August, the town Planning Board gave its approval for Pathway Vineyard to convert the former Regal Cinemas on Gurnet Road into a large worship venue. The church expected to pay about $4.5 million for the purchase and renovation of the movie theater. Pathway Vineyard also has locations in New Gloucester, Lewiston and Biddeford.

Henze said it will take Pathway Vineyard six months to a year to renovate the former Regal building, meaning Parks and Recreation will not be able to move into the space for some time.
