Costumes encouraged for Run the River 5K

Discover Downtown Westbrook is again sponsoring its Run the River 5K, Canine 5K and 1K fun run for kids age 10 and younger. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Riverbank Park on Main Street.

Organizers are encouraging participants to “dress as a monster or wear your best Halloween costume.”

Early registration is $30, day-of is $40, and there is a $10 discount for all students. The first 75 runners to register get a free T-shirt.

The kids fun run is free with no registration necessary.

Historical society calendars

Westbrook Historical Society’s calendars are available for $15, plus $3 shipping and handling. The society accepts cash or checks.

The society and its museum are open from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Saturday at the Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Read to a therapy dog

Children in pre-K through eighth grade can sign up for a 10-minute reading session with Hank, a certified therapy dog, on Monday, Oct. 27, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St.

Available time slots are 3:30, 3:45, 4 and 4:15 p.m.

Rotarians to hear Volkssport speaker

Denise Macaronas of the Southern Maine Volkssport Association will speak when Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club meets for lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Westbrook Regional Vocational Center, 125 Stroudwater St.

Volkssport is German for “sport of the people,” Christine Johnson, Rotary secretary, said in an announcement. The Volkssport Association has more than 200 active clubs nationwide for non-competitive sports groups. For more information, Johnson can be reached at 797-3747.

Red Cross blood drive

The American Red Cross will conduct a blood donation opportunity from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

50 years ago

The American Journal reported on Oct. 29, 1975, that the Oct. 30 menu for the school lunch program called for baked beans with franks, coleslaw, a yeast roll, chocolate cake and milk.
