Owen Taylor intercepted an attempted screen pass and returned it 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, propelling Westbrook to a 27-21 win over Cheverus in a Class B South football game Saturday in Portland.
Turnovers played a huge role in the outcome. Westbrook’s first three touchdowns – all by Cole Tanner – were set up by two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt. Tanner then ended a final Cheverus drive with an interception deep in Westbrook territory.
Cheverus (4-3) led 7-0 after one quarter, thanks to AJ Lauture’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Kevin True.
Tanner tied it with a 5-yard run, and his 17-yard reception from Gio Staples gave the Blue Blazes (6-1) a 14-7 halftime lead.
Cheverus pulled even in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Colton Jewett, but Tanner put Westbrook in front again with a 13-yard run.
The Stags made it 21-21 early in the fourth when Nick Deschambault hit Lauture for a 36-yard touchdown catch.
THORNTON ACADEMY 56, SANFORD 13: Connor Ayoob scored three touchdowns, Noah Fullerton passed for three scores, and the Golden Trojans (6-1) overpowered the Spartans (2-5) in Saco.
Sanford got off to a promising start, opening with a long drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by Jayden Franco. Thornton, though, scored the next five touchdowns for a 34-7 halftime lead.
A 61-yard pass from Fullerton to Ayoob set up Dominic Hussey’s 3-yard touchdown. Ayoob put the Trojans ahead with a 5-yard run, and Will Edborg added back-to-back TDs – an 11-yard run and a 32-yard reception.
Nate Nealey then raced 86 yards with a screen pass just before halftime.
Sanford recovered an onside kick to open the second half, and Franco went up the middle on the next play for a 48-yard touchdown. But Ayoob answered with a 10-yard TD run, then caught a shovel pass and went 73 yards for his third touchdown.
Thornton added to its lead with a blocked punt through the end zone for a safety and a 5-yard touchdown run by Hayden Warren.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH 50, TRAIP ACADEMY 12: Daniel Cashman returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, Trot Moody threw touchdown passes to four different receivers, and the Seagulls (7-0) extended their winning streak to 18 games with a victory over the Rangers (1-6) in Kittery.
Cashman caught a 57-yard TD passes and scored on a 2-yard run. Moody’s other touchdowns throws were 60 yards to Jackson Stanton, 13 yards to Matthew Charron and 54 yards to Wes Gallant, who also had a 40-yard scoring run.
JV Blanco went 70 yards for a Traip touchdown in the third quarter. Max Jordan followed with a 4-yard TD run.
POLAND 35, FREEPORT 14: Damon Martin passed to Landon Cooper for four touchdowns and ran a score, leading the Knights (4-3) over the Falcons (4-3) in Poland.
Cooper had TD receptions of 18 yards in the first quarter, 56 yards in the second, 10 yards in the third and 38 yards in the fourth.
Martin broke a 7-7 tie with a 3-yard run in the second quarter. Poland led 21-7 at halftime and 27-7 after three quarters.
Freeport scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Andrew Thomas in the second quarter and a 6-yard pass from Thomas to Sam Willard in the fourth.
PORTLAND 45, LEWISTON 0: Cordell Jones had 11 carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns, Alex Martin rushed 10 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bulldogs (5-2) handled the Blue Devils (0-7) in Lewiston.
Justin Bouchard was 6 of 6 on extra points, kicked a 35-yard field goal and also had a rushing TD, as did Jake Johnson.
TELSTAR 36, BUCKSPORT 14: Alex Dougherty scored three rushing touchdowns for the Rebels (4-2) in a victory over the Bucks (3-4) at Bethel.
Dougherty scooted to the end zone twice in the first quarter on 60- and 20-yard runs. His third touchdown came in the third quarter on a 45-yard scamper.
Telstar’s Brennan Walker found Bentley Merrill for a 25-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter, and Hunter Koskela rushed for a touchdown.
BOYS SOCCER
BIDDEFORD 2, KENNEBUNK 2: Biddeford’s Dawayne Clark converted a penalty kick with 28 seconds remaining in regulation, helping the Tigers (6-5-2) salvage a draw at Kennebunk (6-4-3).
Earlier in the second half, Levi Christopher set up a tying goal by Grahame MacDonald and then gave Kennebunk a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation.
Joao Andre scored for Biddeford in the first half, assisted by Alexandre Keto.
Biddeford keeper Tyler Pelletier made nine saves. Griffin Whitney of Kennebunk stopped five shots.
THORNTON ACADEMY 1, SANFORD 0: Griffin Ayres headed in a corner kick from Kyle Nicoletti in the 16th minute as the Golden Trojans (7-4-2) beat the Spartans (2-10-1) in Sanford.
Charlie Lamey and Wesley Stepp shared goaltending duties for Thornton.
WINDHAM 2, PORTLAND 1: Dan Hancock notched a goal and an assist as the Eagles (5-7-1) took a two-goal lead and beat the Bulldogs (3-9-3) in Portland.
Sean LeBel also scored for Windham, while Tate Robinson made five saves.
Paulo Augusto scored from Lucas Domingos for Portland. Griffin Lavertu made six saves and Finn Noonan stopped four shots while sharing goaltending duties.
WESTBROOK 7, NOBLE 2: Mo Ahmed recorded a hat trick as the Blue Blazes (7-6) rolled past the Knights (3-11) in Westbrook.
Ithiel Mulumba added two goals, and Abel Clark and Paulo Mena also scored for the Blazes.
Noble got goals from Kaden Ruhland and Leo Grey.
GREELY 1, EDWARD LITTLE 0: Connor Skillin’s first-half goal was the difference in a tight contest between the Rangers (12-1) and the Red Eddies (5-5-1) in Auburn.
Edward Little outshot Greely 11-3, but Skillin buried one of the three Greely shots on goal.
GORHAM 2, MARSHWOOD 0: Brandon Levesque and Moises Ntango scored as the Rams (11-2-1) beat the Hawks (9-4-1) in South Berwick.
Alvar Garcia and Moritz Deppner each had an assist for Gorham.
GIRLS SOCCER
SCARBOROUGH 2, BONNY EAGLE 0: Maya Casey broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half, then set up a goal by Charlotte Kerkela as the Red Storm (12-1) beat the Scots (4-8-1) in Standish.
Scarborough keeper Vera DiSotto faced only one shot. Bonny Eagle’s Keona Ingram made 16 saves.
GORHAM 2, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: Jackie Parenteau broke a tie with about 10 minutes remaining, lifting the Rams (9-4) over the Golden Trojans (8-5) in Gorham.
All three goals were in the second half. Anna Nichols struck first for Gorham, and Harlow O’Leary answered for Thornton.
Gorham keeper Sawyer VonderHaar was credited with four saves. Thornton’s Olivia Frederickson stopped six shots.
GREELY 5, EDWARD LITTLE 0: Lydia Berthiaume recorded a hat trick as the Rangers (8-5) defeated the Red Eddies (2-11) in Cumberland.
Sami Santerre added an unassisted goal and set up a goal by Tori Zandan.
CAPE ELIZABETH 7, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Noelle Mallory produced two goals and two assists, Hailey Gorman also scored twice, and the Capers (13-0) shut out the Rangers (9-4-1) in Cape Elizabeth.
Maddie de Vries added a goal and an assist. Alexa Mallory and Maisie Rayback both scored once, and Kate Hetrick had two assists.
Kelsey Law recorded her ninth shutout.
FIELD HOCKEY
FREEPORT 6, YORK 0: Emily Groves and Liza Flower each had finished with three goals and two assists for the Falcons (11-2) in a win over the Wildcats (5-8-1) at Freeport.
Freeport goalie Maddie Kryzak made five saves. York’s Sarah Orso had 16 saves.
CROSS COUNTRY
MVC CHAMPIONSHIPS: William Morris of Dirigo and Bryanna Hagopian of Madison were the individual champions, and the Winthrop boys and Boothbay/Wiscasset girls captured team titles at the conference meet in Augusta.
Morris, a junior, completed the 5-kilometer UMaine-Augusta course in 16 minutes, 39.6 seconds. Runner-up Alfie Cognata of Winthrop was more than a minute behind (17:49.3), followed closely by Madison’s Craig Paine (17:50.8), Boothbay/Wiscasset’s AJ Crocker (17:55.8) and Winthrop’s Keenan Libby (18:07.3).
Winthrop placed five runners in the top 14 to score 36 points, for a decisive victory over Lisbon (65).
Hagopian, a senior, also won by more than a minute. Her time of 20:09.6 was well ahead of teammate Leah Harper (21:32.6). Dirigo’s McKenzie Boyle (22:06.2), Oak Hill’s Abigail Gervais (22:52.1) and Mt. Abram’s Addie Paul (22:57.9) rounded out the top five.
Boothbay/Wiscasset, led by Maddie Andreasen in seventh place (24:02.7), edged Maranacook for the team title, 61-64. Madison was a close third with 72 points.
VOLLEYBALL
FALMOUTH 3, WINDHAM 0: Olive Clark led the Navigators (7-6) with 15 kills and four aces in a 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 victory over the Eagles (2-11) at Falmouth.
Julia Young contributed five kills and three aces, Abby Shaw had 14 assists, three kills and two aces, and Sophia Bennett finished with 13 assists, two kills and four aces.
