Brittney Barr has resigned from the Westbrook School Committee, Superintendent Peter Lancia announced Oct. 9 in a post on the School Department’s website.
Barr’s resignation was effective Oct. 7. Elected in November last year to an at-large seat, her resignation came with two years remaining of a three-year term.
Barr did not immediately respond to an email Wednesday seeking comment about her resignation.
“We appreciate Ms. Barr’s year of service to the children of Westbrook,” Lancia wrote.
Lancia also could not be immediately reached by email for comment.
Candidates for the vacancy are required to take out nomination papers at the city clerk’s office and submit them with a letter of intent by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23.
“For the at-large seat, candidates must obtain at least 15, but not more than 25, signatures from registered voters from each ward,” City Clerk Ellis Ledoux said in an email Wednesday.
The letter, the School Department says, should include a brief biography and their interest in serving.
School Committee Chair Andrea Mancuso said in the committee’s meeting on Oct. 8 that under state statute the School Committee has 30 days to select a replacement or a special municipal election would be required.
The School Committee will conduct a special committee meeting on Oct. 29 to consider electing a replacement. Candidates will attend the meeting and they could be asked to address the board. Following a vote to select a replacement to fill the vacancy, Ledoux will be available at the meeting to swear in a winning candidate.
