Arianna Efstathiou, who represents Kennebunk on the Regional School Unit 21 School Board, sent a letter of resignation to the board early this week. She’s the third member of that board to resign since July.

Board Chair Matthew Stratford said Efstathiou is leaving the board because her family is moving out of the district.

“We are very sorry that we will not have the opportunity to continue to work with her,” Stratford said.

In an email, Efstathiou reflected on her time as an RSU 21 director.

“I will miss being a part of this community of dedicated educators and active parents,” she wrote.

Efstathiou, who grew up in Ogunquit, was elected to the board in June.

After being elected, Efstathiou said she ran for the school board because she enjoys volunteering and believes everyone has something to contribute.

As a lawyer, Efstathiou said her skills are transferable to the school board position.

“I can provide an even-keeled perspective and a sincere and effective approach to collaboration among people with different opinions on topics that are important to all of us,” she said.

During her short time on the board, Efstathiou served on the Human Resources and Policy committees.

Efstathiou is the third board member to resign since July, joining former members Rachel Kennedy-Smith and Lesley Stoeffler.

In her resignation letter, Kennedy-Smith cited the choice of Martin Grimm as superintendent as one of her reasons for her resignation.

Stoeffler did not provide a reason for her resignation.

Following Efstathiou’s resignation, the Kennebunk Select Board will be tasked with replacing Efstathiou, whose term expires in 2028.

In an interview last month, Select Board Chair Miriam Whitehouse explained the process of choosing an interim director.

Those interested in joining the board will have a set amount of time to send in their applications, Whitehouse said. Then, a candidates night will be held in which each candidate will be asked questions provided by the school board.

“Every candidate has the same questions,” Whitehouse said. “After that, the Select Board deliberates publicly and appoints the person they would like.”

The candidate chosen to replace Efstathiou will serve through 2028.

A deadline for interested candidates to submit their applications has not yet been announced.
