Walter J. Williams

PORTLAND – Walter J. Williams, 85, passed away on Oct. 1, 2025. He was born in Portland on April 9, 1940, the son of James Alfred Williams and Evangeline Margaret (Bowden) Williams.

At the age of 10, Walter and his brothers experienced the profound loss of their mother, Evangeline, to cancer, a moment that shaped his strength and resilience throughout life. He graduated from Scarborough High School with the class of 1959.

Following graduation, Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963 during the Berlin Crisis, achieving the rank of Gunner’s Mate Third Class Petty Officer aboard the USS Tillz (DE 748).

After his service, Walter began a long and dedicated career with the Maine Central Railroad, where he worked as both a brakeman and a locomotive engineer from 1966 until his retirement in 2000.

The most memorable day of Walter’s life was June 8, 1985, when he married the love of his life, Theresa. Walter is survived by his daughter, Kelly Turner and many grandchildren. He is predeceased by his sons, Jamie and Michael Williams and his wife Theresa.
