SCARBOROUGH – Marcel Joseph Polero, affectionately known as “Mike” (and Papa to his beloved grandchildren), passed away on Oct. 2, 2025, in Scarborough, at the age of 83. He left this world the way he lived in it – on his own terms, with a joke, a drink request, and just enough time to avoid the holiday madness he liked to grumble about.
Born on Aug. 16, 1942, in Rumford. Mike spent his life working in sales, primarily in the construction business, where he was known for being sharp, personable, and the kind of guy who could talk to anyone.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Charlene Polero, high school sweethearts who shared a lifetime of laughter, love, bickering and a few eye rolls. Also surviving are his three daughters: Tammy Reed (and her husband Fred), Debby Gould (and her husband Jay), and Tracy Peters (and her husband Dana); eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren, all of whom knew him simply as “Papa” – the man with a quick grin and a grunt, and his signature advice to “stay out of trouble”.
Though not one for hobbies, Mike had his priorities straight: he loved a good cocktail, a loud party, and a singalong -Alouette being his go-to number. His sense of humor and love for good company made him a crowd favorite, whether at a holiday gathering or a Tuesday afternoon. He treasured his morning routine with a coffee, a powdered donut and his newspaper. Throughout the holidays, though he seemed to take pride in his “bah humbug” character, having his family around a table is what truly brought him joy.
Even in his final hours, Mike kept his spirit – and spirits – high, asking the hospital staff for a whiskey and water. That was Mike: charming, stubborn, and always ready for happy hour.
He may have rolled his eyes at Christmas music in October, but Mike embodied the season’s true spirit year-round – bringing joy, gathering people together, and savoring every toast. So, this year, when the holidays come around, raise a glass, belt out, and think of him.
A private family service will be held.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
