Jon E. Beking

WESTBROOK – Jon E. Beking, a talented gardener who loved to make the world more beautiful, passed peacefully on Sept. 28, 2025, at his home in Westbrook, with his husband at his side.

Born in Quantico, Va. on April 21, 1956, Jon was known to many as the cheerful, handsome guy who waited on them at Filene’s, where he sold women’s shoes and perfume, and Portland Wine and Cheese, where he made terrific sandwiches.

In later years he operated his own gardening business, Jonny Gardener, transforming landscapes with energy and vision. In the last years of his life, he worked at Fogg Lighting, where he treasured his co-workers and was treasured by them.

He was raised in Portland, the youngest of five children of John T. Beking and Lorraine (Conley) Cummings. He is survived by his husband of 40 years, Thomas Sumner; his sister, Gail Beking Dennison-Hale, his brother, Thomas Beking; his daughter, Melissa Frazzitta; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his sisters Cheryl Beking and Lynn Elwell.

Jon’s family extends special thanks to his wonderful nurse, Jodi, of Hospice of Southern Maine, who was there when we needed her and then some.

Those who knew and loved Jon and wish to do something in his memory might consider making a donation to the Dempsey Center in Westbrook.
