Hugh Woodbury
SOUTH PORTLAND – Hugh Woodbury died on the eve of his 97th birthday, Sept. 23, 2025, in South Portland.
Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Paterson, N.J., to Eugene and Lena Esplin Woodbury, Hugh grew up in Altadena, Calif. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from Caltech in 1953. He worked for GE’s R&D Center in Niskayuna, N.Y., until retiring in 1990.
Hugh married Joyce Nicholes on June 29, 1955, in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. In 1996, Hugh and Joyce left upstate New York for new adventures on Peaks Island.
Hugh was predeceased by his son, Eugene; and grandson, Henry Joseph.
He is survived by Joyce, his beloved wife of 70 years; six children; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
