Anita Mae (Smith) Martin

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Anita Mae Smith Martin, 87, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away Sept. 30, 2025 at Gosnell in Scarborough.

Born in Waterville on May 23, 1938, to Clara Loucks and Harvey Smith. Anita graduated from Farmington High School and married her high school sweetheart, Joseph A. H. Martin, Jr. after meeting him at a dance.

Anita enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, making and selling wedding cakes, crafting jewelry, creating intricate greeting cards, learning and teaching painting. Anita and Joe loved to dance and socialize with family and friends. She also loved to read music, and played the violin, trombone, piano and banjo.

She retired at the age of 56 with Joe and they explored the country in their RV. They created and maintained many new and long-term friends along the way. After traveling, Anita and Joe settled in Florida for a period of time enjoying friends and sunshine. They later returned home to Maine where they could be close to family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Martin on March 14, 2025; by her son, Lee Martin on Feb. 20, 2020; and her brother, Raymond Smith.

Anita is survived by daughters Lorna Martin of Old Orchard Beach, Laurie (Mark) Emmons of West Baldwin and Lisa (Scott) O’Bar of Old Orchard Beach; her sister, Joyce Ann Morton and brother-in-law, Tommy Cassidy; nieces and nephews Brian and Jennifer Cassidy, Craig Smith and family; grandchildren Wesley Emmons, Olivia Martin, Alex (Johnna) Martin, Erin Martin, Ashley (Justin) Cordwell, and Ansley (Jason) Daley, seven great-grandchildren, Layton and Lincoln Cordwell, Raelynn, Colton and Darren Daley, Aubree Martin and Gabe Martin.

Graveside burial and service for Anita and Joseph, together, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Cemetery, Rumford. For full obituary see http://www.dcpate.com.
