River Bowl clash between Westbrook and Gorham

Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club announced the first River Bowl, a proposed annual game between the Gorham and Westbrook high school football teams, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in Westbrook.

“We were pleased to purchase the trophy for this competition and will have a Rotary presence during the game and presentation,” Christine Johnson, Rotary secretary, said in an announcement.

Scouting on the Green

Scout Troops 87, 83 and 153, along with Cub Scout Pack 87, will host “Scouting on the Green,” a family-friendly recruitment and community engagement event, on Sunday, Oct. 5, from noon to 4 p.m. at Riverbank Park.

The event is open to the public and Westbrook kids and their families are invited to join the troops for an afternoon of interactive activities, demonstrations of outdoor skills, and opportunities to learn about scouting programs open to boys and girls ages 5 to 18 that promote leadership, adventure and civic responsibility, Kevin McGuirk, Den leader of Pack 87, said in an announcement.

Learn about gravestone art

Author and historian Ron Romano will speak about art on gravestones when Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the Oak Room at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The presentation will be about art found at Saccarappa Cemetery in Westbrook, among other cemeteries, and artists who made them. The program is free and open to the public.

Copies of Romano’s books will be available for purchase and refreshments will be served. The program includes a 50/50 raffle.

Hazardous waste drop-off

Westbrook Public Services and Casella are holding their annual household hazardous waste drop-off from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 594 County Road in Westbrook.

The drop-off is only for Westbrook residents who are asked not to mix chemicals or bring ammunition, fireworks or other explosives. No latex paint or non-rechargeable household batteries (except button batteries) will be accepted.

Free, fresh food available

The Locker Project will distribute free, fresh food from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., in Westbrook.

Free food will be distributed at the library every other Thursday through Dec. 18.
