A Turner man was found dead over the weekend after falling off a boat and into a river in upstate New York, officials say.
Edward Lachapelle, 61, was found dead around 1:20 a.m. Saturday in Grand Island, New York, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted to social media.
First responders arrived at the scene near Sandy Beach Yacht Club around 12:20 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that someone had fallen in the water, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the 911 caller, Lachapelle had fallen off the back of his boat while it was docked.
First responders were initially unable to locate Lachapelle, but after a search, his body was found roughly 100 yards away, the sheriff’s office said.
Several New York public safety departments responded to the scene, in addition to U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Grand Island sits in the middle of the Niagara River, north of Buffalo, New York. The yacht club is located on the northern tip of the island, about 6 miles upriver from Niagara Falls.
