Brunswick Police are investigating after a hoax threat prompted campus safety personnel to evacuate some buildings at Bowdoin College Monday.

The reported threat came on the same day police in Waterville investigated a bomb threat at Colby College.

Doug Cook, Bowdoin’s director of communications, confirmed Monday evening that the threat to Bowdoin, which centered around the library, was unfounded.

“Bowdoin Safety and Security Officers were quick to clear the buildings and assess the situation,” Cook wrote in an email. “They soon learned that the threat was a hoax and reopened the buildings. Brunswick Police are investigating the source of the message.”

Details of the threat were not clear Monday night.

Some classes were canceled Monday at Colby College due to a bomb threat that also targeted the college’s library, Colby officials said. Police found no evidence of any threat to safety on the Waterville campus by midday, and two evacuated buildings were deemed safe to reopen.

Earlier this month, Bowdoin postponed a vigil for conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk due to a report of an “external threat” linked to the event. Police later determined there was no continuing danger to campus.
