Robert Alan “Bob” Cohen

HERNANDO, Fla. – Robert Alan “Bob” Cohen, 87, of Hernando, FL (formerly of Portland, Maine) passed away on Sept. 13, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones, after a valiant long-term battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Bob was born on April 4, 1938 to Charles and Gladys Cohen and was raised in South Portland, graduating from South Portland High School in 1956. He received a bachelor’s degree in Business from Boston University in 1960 and a Doctor of Laws degree from Boston University School of Law in 1962. After graduating, he practiced law with his father in Portland under the firm name of Cohen & Cohen. Bob retired from law to Citrus Hills, Hernando, Fla., where he became a financial planner and tutor in the Citrus County School Department.

Bob was very active in the community, being a former president of both the Portland Lions Club and Torch Club of Western Maine. He was elected to the Portland School Board in 1977 and served until 1981. Bob was an avid golfer, scoring two holes-in-one. He enjoyed sharing many laughs, jokes and company with his Citrus Hills golfing buddies and their wives on and off the course. He was a passionate Red Sox and Patriots fan and suffered along with other Red Sox fans until 2004.

Bob was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his long-time companion, Carol Barnes; his three children, Jodi (Joel) Berenson of Bedford, Mass., Mark (Ellen Flaherty) Cohen of Old Orchard Beach, and Marcy (Jeff) Romani of Natick, Mass.; his grandchildren Ben, Josh, Andrew, Adam (Izzy), Alec (Molly), Aidan, Alex and Zach; his brother, Norman (Linda) Cohen of Lexington, Mass.; and his closest friend, Paul Marshall of Portland, who he talked to every Saturday morning without fail.
