BRUNSWICK — The Mt. Ararat girls soccer team came out fast in the second half and made sure rival Brunswick didn’t have an opportunity to respond.

Emma Berry converted a left-to-right cross from Julianna Allen 44 seconds into the second half, doubling the Eagles’ lead. The duo connected again in the 51st minute when Berry scored her second goal to propel Mt. Ararat to a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon.

“It’s just great because they’ve been talking some smack that we’re not a threatening team to them, so it feels good to beat them on their home turf,” Berry said. “It’s also a Homecoming night, so it was even better to start the night this way and then just go have fun with your friends at HoCo. It’s a big team win.”

The Eagles (4-1) have recorded three straight shutouts, outscoring their opponents 13-0. Brunswick (3-3) has been shutout twice and has lost back-to-back games.

Morgandy Crawford stopped three shots for the Eagles.

Brunswick’s Gillian Countway made six saves, including a series from close range in front of the net in the seventh minute, but Allen eventually broke through, converting the fourth attempt into a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.

Mt. Ararat tried to continue its attack, but four straight offsides calls and CeCe Minet’s yellow card for running into Countway limited those chances.

The Eagles found their footing again with the Allen-to-Berry connection early in the second half.

“I challenged (Allen) to get more assists this year; she’s already beaten my challenge,” Mt. Ararat coach Kevin Flaherty said of the Eagles’ leading scorer last season. “Her vision has just improved so much, and her leadership and her unselfishness to get the ball to people when we need to is key.”

Brunswick took four corner kicks in the final 11 minutes of the first half but could not convert any of those into goals. The Dragons did not put another shot on goal until the 64th minute as they struggled to maintain possession.

“I just think we’re a mediocre team,” Brunswick coach Kevin Bachman said. “I just think that we don’t do things well, and we just don’t really give ourselves any chances to score. So when we don’t do that and then we make dumb plays, those things happen. So that’s kind of what happened in this game.”

Bachman added: “I think a lot of our problems really come down to just fundamentals. That’s what we had a big talk about after Camden (a 2-1 overtime loss on Thursday). We haven’t figured it out yet, so hopefully it does click.”
