John J. McManus

WESTBROOK/TOPSHAM – John J. McManus of Topsham, formerly of Westbrook, died peacefully at home Friday, July 18, 2025, after a period of declining health.

John was born April 14, 1932 in San Francisco, Calif. to John and Agnus McManus. He was raised by his foster parents, Walter and Elizabeth Lonsdale, in Massachusetts. After graduating from Hyde Park High School, he joined the Army where he served as MP.

After his military stint, he returned to Massachusetts and had a career at American Can Company eventually moving to Maine to work at the company’s Portland plant. He retired from the company in the early 1990s.

John was a gentle, kind, quiet man who enjoyed walks, family and sports, especially the Patriots.

He is survived by nieces Margaret Lonsdale (Mark Costa) of Brunswick, Catherine Burke (Tim) of Dover, N.H., and nephew, Robert Lonsdale of Portland; as well as grand nephews and nieces.

We would like to thank Adam, Heather, Julia and the whole team at Cadigan Lodge for their compassion and support in caring for John and us these past two years. We also very much appreciate the guidance and skillful care offered by Chrystal, Abby and everyone from the CHANS Hospice team.

At his request there will be no services. Interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Stetson’s Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.

Condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Stetson’s Funeral Home website, http://www.stetsonsfuneralhome.com
