BATH — When a player tackles a coach after a game, it typically isn’t a good look for that high school football program.
It’s a little different when that player orchestrates a fourth quarter go-ahead touchdown drive, seals the win on Homecoming by intercepting a rival’s last-second heave, and then leaps into an assistant coach’s arms as both fall down with big grins.
“This is the best feeling I’ve had in a very long time, maybe even ever,” Morse junior quarterback/safety Dylan Root said after celebrating a 22-14 win over Brunswick with assistant coach Charlie Bingham.
Head coach Jason Darling could only laugh at the scene.
“I just love these guys,” Darling said. “They don’t quit, and they had a great week of practice, and just so proud of them to be able to experience this on Homecoming. They deserve every second of it.”
After forcing Brunswick (0-3) to turn the ball over on downs with 4:35 left, Morse (1-2) was 70 yards away from breaking a 14-14 tie.
Junior running back Junuh Hays (20 carries, 88 yards, TD) and Root (15 carries, 28 yards, 2 TD) traded runs up the middle to get into Brunswick territory.
Once Morse crossed midfield, Root completed just his second pass of the evening, a 39-yard go-route to Caden Wells, to move the ball to the Brunswick 6 with two minutes remaining.
Both of Root’s scores earlier in the game, on the opening drive of the first and fourth quarters, came on QB sneaks. This time, three straight sneaks were called, but the Brunswick defense would not allow the junior to cross the plane. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, Root handed the ball off to Hays, who found an open lane to the end zone on the right side of the offensive line with 26.9 seconds remaining.
“Dylan came in (to the huddle), and he was like, ‘Hey, boys, we got time. Let’s be composed, and let’s run this like we were running it in practice, all right?'” Hays said. “And that’s what we did. … I’m just glad that they all were all focused on Dylan, and I could just get away.”
Hays ran in the 2-point conversion.
Brunswick found most of its offensive success on the ground with the running back duo of Christian McMaster (14 rushes, 57 yards) and Owen Quinn (eight rushes, 80 yards, TD). Ethan Carr’s 5-yard rushing touchdown gave the visitors a 14-8 lead midway through the third quarter.
Robert Bowen completed 5 of 14 passes for 54 yards and one interception.
“We had a good game plan coming in, but for some reason, we just couldn’t hold on to the ball at times,” Brunswick coach Eric Sulzberger said. “We made some crucial mistakes right at the beginning of the game, and unfortunately, things just didn’t go our way. … At times, we show our young abilities, but you know, we just got to keep improving every week.”
Both teams fumbled during a special teams play. Morse recovered a fumble on Quinn’s first kick return of the evening, and Brunswick recovered a muffed punt by Root shortly before halftime. Neither short field resulted in any points.
