The Brick Store Museum announced the opening of “Eerie, Uncanny, Remarkable” in the Patsy Bauman Gallery, a contemporary art exhibition inviting regional artists to explore what the 19th century called phantasmagoria. The fall showcase, timed for the Halloween season, is open Sept. 9 through Oct. 26.
According to a news release, the exhibition celebrates artwork inspired by folklore, the supernatural, and humanity’s ever-evolving fascination with all things spooky. Visitors will step into a world where shadows dance, legends come to life, and the spirit of the season takes form.
Featured works, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and installation, delve into folklore and legends; contemplations of the afterlife, spirits, and the unknown; reflections on life, death, and what may lie beyond; eerie and spooky aesthetics; and the rise of Halloween culture, paranormal curiosity, and the enduring appeal of the supernatural in contemporary life.
Artists showcasing their work include: Kelly Jo Shows, Michael Branca, Lynne Cullen, Dorothy Anne Sirois, Thomas Stirling, Joyce Ellen Weinstein, Amy Bellezza, Cassandra Davidson, Kelly MacDonald, Nora Ordway, Quinn Downing, Patricia Tewes Richards, Elizabeth Hunter, John Stevens, Tim Greenberg, Christina Record, Hyde Flanders, Georgette Morrell, Laura Dauphinais and Charlie Swerdlow.
“We wanted to offer visitors a chance to experience the creative power of our regional artists while tapping into the timeless allure of the mysterious and the macabre,” said Director Cynthia Walker, executive director of the museum, in an email. “It’s a thrilling celebration of the season and of artistic imagination.”
A highlight of the exhibition will be a special “Family Fright Night at Our Museum” on Friday, Oct. 17, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., inviting artists to gather and the public to come together for Halloween storytelling and trick-or-treat stations throughout the museum. Costumes are encouraged. To register online, visit www.brickstoremuseum.org/calendar.
