Alex Martin returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown late in the first half, then set up the go-ahead touchdown with a 29-yard reception in the third quarter as Portland opened its football season Friday night with a 21-7 win over Oxford Hills at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

In a clash between schools that have won two of the last three Class A state championships, the game was scoreless until the closing seconds of the second quarter, when Martin anticipated a pass toward the sideline, stepped in front of the intended receiver and raced untouched to the end zone.

Oxford Hills tied it midway through the third quarter on a 16-yard burst up the middle by Cam Roy. But Portland responded with a touchdown drive of its own, keyed by a pass over the middle from Cordell Jones to Martin, who was tackled at the 1. Jones plunged in on the next play.

The Bulldogs clinched the victory when Alex McKusick scored on a 10-yard run with 5:32 remaining.

BONNY EAGLE 48, SOUTH PORTLAND 6: Bonny Eagle scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes, built a 36-point halftime lead and rolled to a season-opening victory at South Portland.

After Lucas Klehn opened the scoring with a 4-yard run that capped a 75-yard drive in three plays over 30 seconds, Ben Noe returned an interception 18 yards for a score.

Caden Cooper and Nick Breton scored on pass receptions of 15 and 5 yards, and Colby McCormack added a 6-yard touchdown run as Bonny Eagle made it 36-0 by halftime.

After Drew Gervais scored on a 17-yard pass in the third quarter, South Portland crossed the 50 for the first time on the final play of the quarter, a drive that ended with Darius Johnson’s 7-yard scoring catch from Parker Reny.

The Scots added a late touchdown on Aiden McCormack’s 2-yard keeper.

BANGOR 21, DEERING 0: Kyle Johnson ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as Bangor shut out visiting Deering to open the season.

Johnson scored from a yard out with 54 seconds left in the first quarter, then from 4 yards in the third. Zac Cota caught a scoring pass from Johnson midway through the second quarter.

CHEVERUS 35, GORHAM 0: Colton Jewett rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns as the Stags defeated the Rams in Gorham.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 60, ORONO 18: Wes Gallant scored four times on long runs, and the Seagulls, after trailing through the first quarter, put up 24 points in the second and won an opener at Old Orchard Beach.

Orono failed to score again after leading 18-16 in the first quarter. Gallant twice scored on runs of 39 yards, and also from 60 and 31 yards.

FREEPORT 31, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 14: The showdown of Falcons was won on the ground. Sam Willard ran for three touchdowns as Freeport rumbled past Mountain Valley in a season opener in Rumford.

Willard scored from 6, 5 and 3 yards. Andrew Thomas added a 25-yard TD run for Freeport (1-0)

Mountain Valley’s Blake Small tossed two touchdown passes, a 10-yarder to Dylan Theriault and a 62-yard connection with Diquari Thompson.

WESTBROOK 27, MARSHWOOD 16: Gio Staples threw for a touchdown and ran for two scores to lead the Blue Blazes over the Hawks in Westbrook.

Staples passed for 102 yards and had 10 rushes for 50 yards.

Tony Bongomin led Westbrook’s defense with nine tackles, including three for a loss and a sack.

LAKE REGION 50, ELLSWORTH 14: Jaiden Meehan rushed for 115 yards and four touchdowns and also passed for a touchdown as the Lakers won their season opener against the visiting Eagles.

Jayden Cole finished with 104 yards on only seven carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run. Matthew Mansulla returned the second-half kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown, and Cooper Smith caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Meehan.
