Martha Ellen (McCahill) Sprague
GORHAM – Martha Ellen (McCahill) Sprague, 41, of Gorham, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, at Maine Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
From Pittsford, New York, Martha was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Anderson) McCahill and Philip McCahill. She was the loving wife of Christopher Ryan Sprague, whom she married in 2013, and the devoted mother of Monica Ellen Sprague, whom she cherished deeply.
Martha graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, New York, in 2002. She went on to earn a degree in Public and Community Service Studies from Providence College in 2006, followed by a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern Maine in 2012. She dedicated 14 years of her career to Maine Health Behavioral Health, the majority at Spring Harbor Hospital, where she worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Active in her community, Martha was a longtime member of the Junior League of Portland, a troop leader with the Girl Scouts of Maine, and a communicant at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. She loved knitting, cooking, walking, and traveling, but above all treasured her time with Monica. In the final year of her life, she joined her husband in fundraising for Make-A-Wish Maine, an organization that had touched their family in profound ways shortly before her own diagnosis.
Martha is survived by her parents; her husband, Christopher; and her daughter, Monica. She is also lovingly remembered by her father-in-law, Daniel Sprague; her brother-in-law, Brian Sprague; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins from both her own and Christopher’s families. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Woods and Elizabeth McCahill of Slingerlands, New York, and Charles and Ellen Anderson of Menands, New York, as well as her mother-in-law, Donna Sprague of Bangor.
The family invites you to a time of visitation on Thursday September 4, from 4-6 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Friday September 5, at 10 a.m., immediately followed by a committal service at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
