DAYTON – Rachel C. Smith, 93, of Waterhouse Road, passed away Aug. 29, 2025 at the Seal Rock Healthcare Facility in Saco.

She was born on June 30, 1932, the daughter of Walker B. and Doris M. Cole Smith in Waterboro.

She attended a one room schoolhouse in Dayton and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1949. She graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree of Master of Arts in History in 1958. To further her education, she attended Simmons College and earned a Master of Science degree in 1965.

She was employed by the Portland Public Library, working at the Burbank Branch and in the main library : the children’s room and reference desk.

Rachel was a member of the Goodwins Mills Advent Christian Church for 81 years, where she was the Sunday school secretary/treasurer for many years.

She enjoyed attending symphonies, plays and concerts. She loved traveling in the United States and abroad. Rachel was a member of the Garden Club and also enjoyed raising many varieties of peonies.

She is survived by twp nieces, Sharon Smith Kearns (husband Brian) of Saco, and Susan Smith Williams (husband John) of Avon, Conn.; also surviving are three nephews, Alfred Grantham of Saco, Jason Grantham (wife Kelly) of Saco, and Andrew Grantham (wife Cassandra) of Falmouth. She is also fortunate to be survived by three great-nieces, Charlotte, Olivia and Grace and one great-nephew Michael. She was always interested in their various activities and very proud of their accomplishments; also a sister-in-law, Ruth Smith of Dayton. She is missed by numerous cousins, and many dear friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 3, at the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday Sept. 4 at the Advent Christian Church in Dayton.
