Gordon Curtis Ayer
KENNEBUNKPORT – Gordon Curtis Ayer, 78, of Kennebunkport died peacefully on Friday, June 6, 2025 in Sarasota, Fla. at Tidewater Hospice. This came after a multi-year period of declining health, made worse by the devastating effects of Dementia/Alzheimer’s. We are eternally grateful for the staff at Town Square Center in Sarasota, Fla. for their care and compassion over the last year, and to Tidewater Hospice for the peace they provided in the end.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Constance Ayer; and his brother, Bruce Ayer.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan, who we saw show unwavering love, loyalty, and kindness; his children, Jennifer (Brian) Hughes of Canton, Ga., Colin (Katie) Ayer of Kennebunkport, and Schuyler Ayer of Hampton, N.H.; his nine grandchildren; his brother, Mark (Connie) Ayer of Bozeman, Mont.; his mother-in-law (with whom he loved to banter with) Lucille Donovan of Fredericksburg, Va.; his brother-in-law, Keith (Karen) Whelpley of Fredericksburg, Va.; and his extended family of nephews, nieces, and so many longtime friends.
Gordon’s roots to the Kennebunks and surrounding communities ran deep through family, friends, clients, and those he met through countless civic endeavors. He never claimed to be a perfect man, but always did his best to stand up for what he felt was just and right.
We, (Colin and Schuyler), recognized that our father would not have wanted, allowed, let alone attended “some get together” in his honor. In fact, we are quite certain that this would have caused quite a large family argument pre/intra/post event (if it even happened). Then, this same argument would have then been rekindled at several dinners, holidays, or family functions for at least another two years (minimum). Which, if you knew him, is quite funny considering the enjoyment he got from emceeing events honoring (or roasting) those closest to him.
That being said, we figured since we never got to win an argument in the home courtroom overseen by our father, a celebration of life will be held…Objection? Overruled. On Sept. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Arundel Yacht Club, 51 Ocean Ave., Kennebunkport (on-street parking). All who knew Gordon are welcome to come share stories, laughter, and a laid back evening of reminiscing.
