Agnes Ulvilda Moy

WELLS – Much loved sister, aunt, and friend, Agnes Ulvilda Moy, 72, passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2025, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

Agnes was born a small child in Key West, Fla. on Oct. 1, 1952, to her parents, Ulvilda Kurtz Moy and Truman D. Moy. She, along with her two younger sisters, were raised as “Navy brats,” with her family moving several times during the first five years of her life. In 1960, Agnes’ father retired from naval service and moved to York Beach. Agnes graduated from York High School in 1970 and from Gorham State College in 1974. She later earned her master’s degree in library science from the University of Rhode Island.

As a talented and compassionate children’s librarian, Agnes gifted the children of Kittery at Frisbee Elementary School with her delightful presence. But she was most well-known and beloved as children’s librarian at York Public Library from 1990 to 2001, where she taught the love of reading to the lucky little people of the town. She always knew the perfect book to recommend, and her weekly story times at the library inspired and delighted generations of York children.

At the library and other places she worked, Agnes loved being around people, and people loved being around her. If you were lucky enough to know Agnes, you knew that she had a sassy sense of humor, a photographic memory, and a compassion for other people and their stories.

She also always enjoyed wearing eclectic hats, holiday costumes, and assorted pins, which became famous in the communities she lived in. She had a zest for life – including skydiving for the first time in her 60s – and loved her cats, who all lived long and pampered lives.

Agnes was a beloved sister who was always available to help and the life of family parties and holidays. She was a loving aunt to her nephews, Dakota and Chad, and she inspired their imaginations by helping them discover “dinosaur eggs” in the backyard, taught them the constellations, and encouraged Dakota’s love of travel by taking him on exciting international trips. She also loved her grandniece Alice, whose favorite books remain those gifted by her great-Aunt Agnes.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents.

She is survived by her sisters, Rebecca Moy (Stephen Knoepfel) and Lona Davis; nephews Dakota Irvin (Grace Irvin) and Chad Davis; great-niece, Alice Irvin and newly arrived great-nephew, Truman Irvin.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to York Public Library’s Children’s Room in Agnes’ name. Your kind gifts will pay for a selection of her favorite children’s books.
