A single-vehicle crash on State Park Road in Casco early Sunday morning left one man dead after his car was engulfed in flames, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 1:15 a.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a crash near the Casco-Naples town line. Deputies found a silver Jeep off the road fully on fire, according to the news release. They soon located the driver, Nicholas Strout, 35, of Hiram, outside the vehicle with life-threatening injuries.
Casco Rescue transported Stout to Bridgton Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
State Park Road was closed for several hours while the sheriff’s office field service and investigation divisions were assisted by the Casco Fire Department, Naples Fire Department and an accident reconstructionist from the Saco Police Department on Sunday.
The initial investigation indicates that Strout was driving west on State Park Road toward the road when his vehicle went off the road and collided with a large tree. Both vehicle speed and driver intoxication are believed to be factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
