Students at Topsham-based School Administrative District 75 return to the classroom next week. Superintendent Heidi O’Leary shared what parents need to know.
Are there any changes in student cellphone use or technology?
“There will be significant changes to the student cell phone and technology policy at both Mt. Ararat High School and Mt. Ararat Middle School this year. Both schools are implementing a new policy, JICJ: Student Use of Cell Phones and Other Technology Devices, which restricts student access to personal technology during the school day,” O’Leary wrote in an email to The Times Record. “The new policy will create a phone-free and smartwatch-free environment from the time students arrive until the end of the school day.”
Under the new policy, students will be required to place their phones and smartwatches in a Yondr pouch, a secure, lockable case, when they arrive at school. The pouch will remain locked until the end of the school day, O’Leary wrote. Students will be responsible for bringing their Yondr pouch to school each day, and there will be a replacement fee for lost or damaged pouches.
Students can always choose to leave their devices at home rather than utilize the pouch system. They will be able to use the main office phone to get in contact with their parents during school hours, according to O’Leary.
“The goal of the new policy is to improve student focus, increase face-to-face social interaction, and create a better environment for learning,” O’Leary wrote.
Are there any changes in school leadership from last year?
Heidi Wright takes over the athletic director position this school year, replacing former director Geoff Godo, O’Leary wrote.
Are there any changes in academic calendar, school start times or bus routes students need to know about?
“There are no changes to the academic calendar, school start times, or bus routes,” O’Leary wrote.
Any other significant changes or developments in the district since last year?
“The district is continuing to implement its Strategic Plan,” O’Leary wrote. “This plan aims to guide the district’s work over the next five years, with goals that include reviewing professional learning, developing systems to measure student success, and enhancing school security.”
The strategic plan is available on the district website.
