Post 62 to honor Barr
The Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion will honor the late Roger Barr, a past post commander, when it meets at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at its headquarters. The headquarters are at 17 Dunn St. in Westbrook. It’s the post’s first monthly meeting of the fall season.
Barr died last week at age 81. The post will drape its charter in a ceremony for Barr, a veteran of the Air National Guard. He was post commander in 2021 and 2022.
A dinner with haddock parmigiana, tossed salad, and dessert will be served at 5:45 p.m. The cost is $10.
Julia Smythe, a regent with the Wadsworth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will be guest speaker at 6:30 p.m. The Barr ceremony will follow Smythe and then the post business meeting.

Woman’s club to meet
Westbrook Woman’s Club will kick off its new meeting year with a luncheon social for members at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at DiMillo’s Restaurant in Portland.
The club meets on most first and third Tuesdays of the month from September to May in the Spruce Room at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
Nominations due date nears
Candidate nomination papers for elected positions must be filed no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, in the office of City Clerk Ellis Ledoux at City Hall, 2 York St.
The municipal election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The American Journal reported on Aug. 27, 1975, that Robert B. McCrillis, 15, earned the money to buy a 10 speed bicycle and rode it 100 miles to Pittsfield to visit three brothers and their families.
