School resumes next week
The Westbrook School Department has announced the dates for classes to start:
Grades 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and 10 will start on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Grades 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 and 12 start on Thursday, Aug. 28, while kindergarten begins Tuesday, Sept. 2.
There will be no school on Friday, Aug. 29, and Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day.

Summer concert
Queen tribute band Masterstroke will perform at Vallee Square for a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21.
Rotarians to meet
Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club will conduct an assembly/business meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Brookside Food and Drink, 125 Bridgton Road, Westbrook.
The club will not meet for lunch on Tuesdays Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 as Westbrook Regional Vocational Center prepares for the new school year.
Blood drive
The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
“Every donation can save up to three lives; your impact is real and immediate,” a Red Cross announcement said.
Walk-ins are welcome, but several appointment times were available early this week. To schedule an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org/give or call 800-733-2767.
50 years ago
The American Journal reported on Aug. 20, 1975, that Lisa, Melanie and James Hebert of San Diego, California, were visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hebert, on Prince Street.
