The trial of a man charged in connection with a deadly 2022 robbery in Portland has been postponed, despite concerns from the victim’s family, who have said they’re frustrated with the delays.
Jonathan Geisinger is charged with felony murder and robbery in the death of Derald “Darry” Coffin, who was fatally shot in April 2022 on Woodford Street. Three other men also faced charges in the shooting, which also left a woman injured.

Geisinger, 48, has spent more than three years in jail awaiting trial. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in July 2022 and rejected a 12-year plea deal with prosecutors last August. His trial was scheduled for this month, but his attorney filed a motion to extend the timeline due to scheduling conflicts with another case.
Cumberland County Superior Court Justice John O’Neil told Geisinger during a hearing Monday that the extension means he might have to wait more than a year in custody for his trial. Geisinger said he understood.
O’Neil said he was “taken aback” when he received the defense’s motion to push back the trial date. He granted the motion and asked that they find the earliest available date for the trial.
Defense attorney Jon Gale, who is representing Geisinger, said after the hearing that a new trial date has not yet been scheduled.
Assistant Attorney General Leanne Robbin said during the hearing that prosecutors were neutral on whether to reschedule the trial. She said it would be more difficult to coordinate with witnesses set to testify, but acknowledged Geisinger’s attorney is “between a rock and a hard place” with his caseload.

Robbin also said the victim’s family was looking forward to resolving this case. Coffin’s family told the Press Herald in an interview last summer that they’re disappointed about delays in the court system and feel doubtful that they’ll receive closure.
Geisinger is one of four men who were arrested and charged in connection with Coffin’s death. The other men’s cases have been resolved in the years since the shooting.
Damion Butterfield, 25, took a last-minute plea deal during his trial in December 2023. He was sentenced to 35 years in state prison for murder, attempted murder and robbery. Though he’s attempted to appeal his sentence, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court maintains that he had a fair trial.
Anthony Osborne was sentenced in February 2024 to eight years in prison for orchestrating the robbery that led to Coffin’s death. And another suspect, Thomas MacDonald, pleaded guilty in April 2023 to one count of hindering apprehension and has yet to be sentenced. He testified against Butterfield during his trial.
