Dave Parkhurst
BOOTHBAY – Dave Parkhurst, 71, passed away on July 29, 2025, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Dave was born in Belfast in 1953, but moved to Boothbay Harbor that summer, growing up in a neighborhood full of children who remained lifelong friends.
Dave played basketball and football for the YMCA and local schools, all while working for his father’s crab and lobster business, graduating in 1971 from Boothbay Region High School. He received an Associate in Marine Biology from SMCC in 1973 and then worked briefly with Texas Instruments along the Hudson River.
Dave married his high school sweetheart, Cathlene Cook, of Portland and East Boothbay, in 1975 and soon began work at the Department of Marine Resources. There they raised their two children, Kate and Jordan, in Boothbay, for whom Dave was the most loving, caring, and hilarious father.
For 49 years, Dave was a high school (and sometimes college) basketball referee, making a name for himself throughout Vacationland. Dave also raised money for the local Booster’s Club and to put lights on the Boothbay athletic field and walked 100 miles to raise money for stop clocks at the YMCA pool. Later in life, he enjoyed an annual Father’s Day 5k run with his daughter and watching her compete in the annual Tri for the Cure triathlon.
After retiring last year, Dave celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary and attended his granddaughter’s graduation from Scarborough High School, perfect capstones to a life dedicated to the care and love of his family and friends.
Dave is survived by his wife, Cathie Parkhurst of Boothbay; his daughter, Kate Carpenter (Mark) and granddaughters, Ava and Sophia, of Scarborough, and his son, Jordan of Los Angeles; his siblings Geoff (Michelle) Parkhurst, Matt Parkhurst and Beth Skinner, his wife’s siblings Mike (Karen) Cook, Mary Jane (John) Tracy, and Jackie Cook; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins; and several hundred friends throughout the United States and Iceland.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 9, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Brown’s Wharf (121 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538) – additional parking available at the Catholic Church.
