Roger P. Benoit

WELLS – Roger P. Benoit, 89, of Wells, died at his home in Wells on July 27, 2025.

Roger was born May 30, 1936, in Clinton, Massachusetts, son of Paul and Tiola (Savoy) Benoit, grew up in Springfield and moved to Wells, in 1995.

Roger attended Cathedral High School in Springfield, graduating in 1953. He served in the United States Air Force as an airman from 1954 to 1958. Enlisting, he requested work in airplane maintenance but the Air Force, in its abundant wisdom, placed him in detail orientated financial jobs, roles which he would later pursue the rest of his life. Serving in Tennessee, Japan and Montana he was discharged from active duty in 1958 in Montana and returned to Springfield to attend American International College (AIC), graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.

During his college years he dated the woman who would become “the one”, Janice Beauregard. Both were in the same home room in high school but had no recollection of each other when they met when he was in college and were married in Springfield in 1963 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2023.

Roger embarked on a 30-year career in the Pension Division of MassMutual in Springfield after graduation from AIC in 1962. He worked in the then infant specialty of computer programming, advanced to a management role, served on several system development projects, had many technical support roles over his career and ended his career as Senior Technical Support Consultant. He took an early retirement in 1992, and he and Janice decided to move to Maine in 1995 where Janice bought Allen’s Footwear in Sanford. Later, together, they ran a satellite of Congdon’s Doughnuts in Ogunquit and then worked at the main store in Wells. Janice retired in 2004, and Roger left Congdon’s in 2006 to return to his financial roots, luckily finding a part time position as a planning assistant in the Ameriprise Financial office of Jeffrey Bonney in Kennebunk calling it the best part time job he could have ever had given his background and interests. He finally retired for keeps in 2012.

Roger learned woodworking from his father, decided on that as a hobby, and built several pieces of furniture for the family home. He was also an avid reader; Janice could seldom find him without a book or Kindle in his hands. He preferred non-fiction or historical novels related to World War II, perhaps because he had seven uncles serving at that time in the Army Air Force and Seabees.

Roger is survived by two daughters, Nicole Saloio of Denver, Colorado and Suzanne, also of Wells; his beloved friends, Marcie and Trish, who became family; and by his little furry grandson, Blitz.
