Donald Lee Mains

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Donald Lee Mains, mostly known as Buzzy Mains, born Aug. 28, 1938, to Kenneth and Dorothy Mains, passed away July 23, 2025, peacefully in Boca Raton Florida. He lived in Florida for the last 13 years after moving from Windham, Maine, where he was born and spent most of his life. He was a compassionate child often riding his horse from his River Road home to Aimhi Lodge in order to give the children camping there horse rides for free. At the age of 12 while working with the field horses he had a tragic accident that nearly ended his life. One of the horses reared up stepping on his head crushing his skull. Doctors feared he was to severely injured to survive and declared him dead. His father, Ken Mains mandated that they try to revive him and bring him back to life. The next 74 years of his life was spent working for excavation contractors at CR Tandberg and White Brothers and was recognized as one of the most pristine dozer operators in the area. Buzzy was known as a hard worker and took pride in the quality of his work.

Buzzy enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting in the Sebago Lake area using the teachings from his father, who was a Maine State Guide. In his younger days, Buzzy could be seen proudly driving his 1957 black and white Chevy around town. In the 1960’s he spent endless hours building stock cars to race at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. Buzzy also joined the Shriners International and participated in the Kora Shrine Cycle Corp. He rode his mini bike in parades at Windham Old Home days and other area city parades until 1983.

Later in life he met and married the love of his life, Linda (Varney). They moved to Burlington Vermont for a short period of time until Linda retired from GMAC. Buzzy and Linda enjoyed retirement, becoming snowbirds in Davenport, Fla., with their RV. Buzzy lost Linda when she passed on May 26, 2011. This began a new journey of life with him relocating to Boca Raton, Florida where he moved to be closer to his Florida family. His friendships that he built in West Lakes, Boca were so important to him. He even took on jobs locking up the clubhouse nightly, delivering newspapers and taking friends to Bingo twice a week. His friends will miss his kindness and willing to help those in need.

Nothing meant more to Buzzy then his family. He always expressed his love for all in every conversation. He is survived by his children, Lori Cobb and Ellis Coe, Kim Burnham and Erik Ousback, Richard Mains and Lisa Vieux, Jeff and Heidi Mains, Michelle and Michael Zinko, his grandchildren, Brandon, Mike, Logan, Brooke, Tyler, Justin, Chayanne, Ellis, Travis, Jasmine, and his great grandchildren, Jaxson and Mila. Predeceased are his mother and father, wife, Linda Mains, and sister, Ruth M. Butler.

Buzzy was determined to spend his final days in Maine to see his great grandchildren. He fished, played and even picked weeds from the beach with them. This brought immense happiness to him. He could not have written the end of his story any better.

Buzzy will be laid to rest next to Linda in Westbrook. There will be a private family service later.
