The largest indoor skatepark in the state is getting a facelift, breathing new life into a gathering place for kids and teens from the Midcoast and beyond.

Bee Daniel, a Portland-based artist, grew up in central Maine and spent some time visiting the skatepark at Midcoast Youth Center and Skatepark as a kid. She remembered seeing the graffiti and murals as a kid and is now freshening up the artwork on the walls.
The first portion of the mural was finished Monday, July 28, as the three artists worked with spray paint to bring their creations to life. The Midcoast Youth Center aims to revitalize the space in time for the upcoming Maine Skateboard Association Skate Jam on Sept. 13.
Daniel collaborated with a couple of Maine and out-of-state artists to graffiti the walls, featuring abstract letters on either side of the interior walls of the skatepark. The second portion of the mural project, the back wall project, could involve input from the kids who use the skatepark. The third project could include the painting of the halfpipe, but it is dependent on funding from the Midcoast Youth Center. The nonprofit youth center has applied for a T-Mobile Hometown grant for public art and property refurbishment, said Kirstie Truluck, director of Development at the Midcoast Youth Center.
The Midcoast Youth Center has a goal of reinvigorating the skatepark, which was founded in the early 2000s by local teens, Truluck said.
