Florence (Walker) Morrison
FALMOUTH – Florence “Flonny” Walker Morrison was a lifelong educator and a bright presence wherever she landed. A generous teacher in the kitchen, Flonny also shared her wisdom as a seamstress, quilter, and gardener.
She was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Boston, to Mary E. (Bostock) Walker and Hurlburt Thayer Walker. The family lived in Newton, Mass.; Goffstown, N.H.; then Yarmouth, where she was active in Girl Scouts and swimming. Flonny was a camper, counselor, and waterfront director at Camp Laughing Loon.
She graduated from Waynflete in 1955. Flonny studied early childhood education and was student council president at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., graduating in 1959; she volunteered for the Wheaton Alumni Association in her retirement.
In 1959, Flonny married Alvin Hamblen Morrison, residing in Portland; Boston; and Yarmouth. She began her teaching career in Portland before becoming a full-time mother and homemaker.
In the late 1960s, the family moved to Western New York and settled in Fredonia where Flonny returned to teaching. She and Al were active in the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 4-H, and volunteered with the high school band and the Unicorn Folk Music Series. After earning her MA from SUNY Fredonia in 1984 with a thesis on Edith Wharton, Flonny became an instructor for Empire State University. She also worked at the Barker Historical Museum. She volunteered with the League of Women Voters and marched on Washington in 1989 in the March for Women’s Equality and Women’s Lives.
Returning to Maine in 1992, Flonny worked at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, and served on various New Gloucester town boards. She and Al moved to Raymond in 1998 near the family’s camp on Panther Pond. There, Flonny volunteered with Born to Read and for the Raymond Village Library. They moved to Ocean View in Falmouth in 2011.
Flonny died July 11, 2025 at Legacy Memory Care and is survived by her brother, Thayer Walker (and Claire McCarthy) of Gualala, Calif.; three daughters, Ann (and Roger) Spinney of Presque Isle, Jane Morrison of Atlanta, Ga., Ruth Morrison (and Frank Stevens) of South Portland; plus nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
