Lillian McPhail
WOOLWICH – Lillian McPhail, 94, passed peacefully Saturday morning, July 19, 2025, in Lewiston. Lillian was born Oct. 28, 1930 to Harold and Lottie (Hodgkins) Strout in Casco. She spent her childhood in the Casco area, where she often spoke of her friends which she kept in close contact with through her life. Her family later moved to South Portland. She graduated from South Portland High School. This is about the time she met her future husband, John McPhail. After John was in the Navy they settled down in Woolwich where they raised four children. This was their home.
Lillian was a member of the Woolwich Grange, the Woolwich Fire Dept. Auxiliary where she bowled in the woman’s league. She also was a charter member of the Knit Wits Club.
While her children were young she was a stay at home mom. Once they were older she worked at Bill’s Market, then Ron’s Superette in Woolwich. She also worked at The Sandwich Shop in Bath.
In later years Lillian and John belonged to the Down Easters Good Sam Club. They spent many winters in Zephyr Hills, Florida as well as traveling all over the United States. It’s an understatement saying that they packed a lot of memories in their 73 years of marriage.
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, her sister Gladys Hodgkins, her half-sister Evelyn Reckord, and husband John McPhail
She is survived by her children; Wayne (Jean Furber), Linda (Gary Varney), Pamela Ritenour and Debra McPhail. She also leaves behind her five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Along with sisters-in-law, Joan McPhail and Janice Francis
Thank you Mom – We will miss you – Job well done!
