Windham suffered extensive damage during a thunderstorm that swept across southern Maine last Sunday. According to a Facebook post from the town of Windham, the Windham Fire Department responded to 26 storm-related incidents on Sunday afternoon. The incidents included local flooding and trees falling onto private property. The bulk of the incidents, the post said, were in and around Windham Center. No injuries were reported.
Brent Libby, chief of the Windham Fire Department, told Lakes Region Now that the damage was mostly in Windham Center and the Lower Roosevelt Trail area. In the trail area, he said, tree limbs had landed on both a home and a garage. Another tree limb, he said, took out a power line on Pettingill Road, which resulted in the closure of Roosevelt Trail for about 90 minutes before Central Maine Power could secure the area.
North Windham, meanwhile, saw some localized flooding due to the amount of rainfall, which the National Weather Service office in Gray estimated to be around 1.5 inches in Cumberland County. Libby said the flooding subsided on its own, without leaving any lasting damage.
