A 14-year-old was apprehended Friday shortly after escaping Maine’s only youth prison, officials said Monday.
The teen got out of Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland just after 9:30 p.m., according to a Maine Department of Corrections statement issued Monday afternoon.
The 14-year-old was later “safely apprehended without incident” by South Portland police around 11:50 p.m.
This is the second escape within a year at the facility, which workers say has long been plagued by staffing and other issues.
Last summer, two teens broke out of Long Creek by jumping from the roof. Their escape prompted a three-day manhunt, and the teens were arrested after crashing stolen cars.
Department of Corrections officials “identified the method of (Friday’s) escape” and are “taking action to prevent future incidents of this kind,” the department said.
Officials did not respond to questions Monday afternoon about how the teen escaped, how the escape was discovered, whether the child was considered dangerous and what security measures are being taken.
