Thomas Kirk Weddle
BRUNSWICK – Thomas Kirk Weddle, 72, of Brunswick passed away on July 13, 2025 after an 11-year battle with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. He was surrounded with love by his wife Susan, daughters Rebecca, Hannah and Emily, and granddaughter Lily at the time of his death.
Tom was a quiet and kind man who left an impact on everyone who knew him. He was first and foremost a family man. He was extremely proud of his three daughters and supported them on the sidelines of their concerts, plays, and sporting events. He enjoyed introducing them to the outdoors: camping, hiking, skiing, going to the beach, and viewing the local geology. Tom’s legacy will live on through the love he shared while spending time with his family and the memories will be cherished forever.
Tom was born in Lynn, Mass. on Aug. 8, 1952 to Earl Kirk and Dorothy Swanson Weddle. He grew up in Saugus, Mass. and was always a proud son of Saugus, Mass. As the youngest of three boys, his childhood was spent exploring the local woods and learning to play the drums. He played drums in numerous rock and roll bands through the years, inspired by his favorite band, The Rolling Stones. At the age of 13, he climbed the fence at Manning Bowl in Lynn to see The Stones perform in their first American tour. In later years, Tom became interested in the Native Americans of the Saugus area and did extensive research on John Tontoquon.
Tom graduated from Boston University with a BS degree, attained a master’s degree in Geology at UMass Amherst, and completed his PhD at Boston University in Glacial Geology. After working in geologic consulting for several years, Tom began a 31-year career with the Maine Geological Survey. His area of expertise was mapping the surficial glacial deposits from the last ice age. Tom’s contributions to understanding Maine’s surficial geology and groundwater resources were significant. He authored or co-authored 55 surficial maps, 111 significant aquifer maps, numerous professional publications, and 15 NEIGC field trip guides.
Tom was enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge and passion for geology. He enjoyed mentoring the next generation of geologists and gave many an opportunity to work alongside him in the field. He proudly served as the secretary of the New England Intercollegiate Geologic Conference (NEIGC) for 16 years, which sponsored an annual field trip to introduce students to the local geology in New England.
Community service was also important to Tom. He was an early board member of the Brunswick Topsham Land Trust, served on the Town of Brunswick Solid Waste Committee, and was a member of the Maine Water Well Commission. He was an active member of First Parish Church, serving as a Deacon and on the Church Council, as well as playing in the World Percussion Ensemble. Tom found spirituality in nature and was happiest being outside. He loved to golf and was pleased to have once scored a hole in one. He was also a diehard Boston sports fan, especially the Red Sox.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Susan Corderman Weddle; daughter, Rebecca Walters, husband Jesse and granddaughter Lily Jane; daughter, Hannah Weddle; and daughter, Emily Anzola and husband Alberto; and many extended family members. Tom’s family would like to thank the staff of the Barron Center for the compassionate care they gave Tom over the past four years.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A celebration of life will be held on Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at First Parish Church, Maine Street, Brunswick with a reception immediately following.
