Several people were injured and a dog was seriously hurt when a Metro bus and two vehicles crashed at an intersection in Westbrook on Friday.

A vehicle was eastbound on William Clarke Drive and did not stop at the red light at the Mechanic Street intersection about 10:05 a.m., the Westbrook Police Department said in a statement Friday.

The Metro bus, which had no passengers on board, was already moving through the intersection from Mechanic Street with a green light, police said. The bus struck the vehicle that went through the red light, with no way of stopping in time, police said.

The blow from the bus sent the vehicle colliding with another automobile that was stopped at the intersection.

“There was a police officer on William Clarke Drive westbound that witnessed the crash, and escaped being hit by the offending vehicle by a matter of feet,” police said. “The officer immediately requested additional police units to respond, along with Fire Rescue units, leading to a very quick response by all of Westbrook Public Safety.”

The operator of the vehicle that went through the red light was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. A dog in that vehicle was seriously injured and a police officer rushed the dog to an emergency animal hospital.

The driver of the bus was also taken to the hospital.

The two front-seat occupants of the automobile that was stopped at the red light received minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital. A child in the back seat was not injured, police said.

William Clarke Drive was closed for about three hours while the crash was cleaned up and the department’s crash reconstructionist investigated.

“Once the investigation is complete, the Westbrook Police Department will consult with the District Attorney’s Office on what criminal charges may be appropriate for this case,” the department’s statement said.
