The popular bagel company PopUp Bagels is opening its first Maine location in Portland this fall.

The company has signed a 10-year lease at 210 Middle Street in Old Port Square. The cafe is to be in the distinctive curved building that was previously briefly home to Nosh Taco and before that to vegan restaurant Copper Branch.

“There couldn’t be a more perfect location for us,” said Jamie Lissette, the New England Franchisee for PopUp Bagels, in a recent press release. “We love the space and are thrilled to be introducing our award-winning bagels to the downtown Portland food scene.”

PopUp Bagels is based in Connecticut, but has locations in New York City and Massachusetts. They’re known for not slicing or toasting their bagels. Rather, the bagels are supposed to be served hot from the oven and customers rip them apart and dip them into cream cheese.

PopUp Bagels is entering the Maine market at a busy time. Around the state, over a dozen bagel shops are open, including the nearby Works Cafe, and the opening of Henry’s Bagel in Kittery earlier this month.
