Elevenses Cafe & Bakery is set to officially open later this summer on Maine St. in Brunswick. The former barbershop turned fantasy-inspired cafe offers customers an unusual dining experience. Since June 11, the cafe has been open for occasional hours with a limited menu, basically a series of soft openings, to allow its staff to get up to speed.
“We are still practicing and working on our magic so please remember to be patient and kind,” the restaurant’s Instagram account says.
But already Elevenses has gone viral on social media, gaining the business over 12,000 followers in just a few weeks even before opening. “It’s a really great problem to have, but it’s really made it feel intense,” said co-owner Nicole Juntura.
Elevenses refers to the second-breakfast meal that is referenced in “The Hobbit” — the book as well as the movie franchise based off J.R. Tolkein’s work — and is a part of British dining culture. Juntura said she got the idea for the restaurant because she was an English major in college and it appeals to her and her husband, Chris’s, love for anything “nerdish.”
The cafe, at 50 Maine St., includes specialty coffee and tea drinks alongside a brunch menu “with British flair.” Juntura hopes to highlight loose leaf teas and offer an afternoon tea service in the fall — another ode to British dining culture.
“Our whole goal is to make it feel really special and to provide some escapism,” Juntura said. “But at the end of the day, we’re a cafe on Maine Street, so we wanted to make sure it felt timeless and classic.”
