Words matter! I was stunned by the choice of the word “collide” in the headline of your June 19 story about the Prismatic Ball held in Portland. I rushed to read the story, thinking there had been some conflict among the organizers of the event.

After reading the article carefully, I realized that I had been misled by the headline. There was no “collision” at all. Sounds like the groups involved are working well together. Why then did your editors choose to use the word collide in the headline? Was it to boost clicks on the article?

For reference, according to Thesaurus.com some synonyms for the word “collide” include strike, bang, smash, clash, conflict, among others. The Portland Press Herald could have chosen any number of uplifting words that describe the true spirit of the event as described in the article. Please do better. Words matter.
