Susan C. Smith
TOPSHAM – Susan C. Smith, 84, of Topsham, died of natural causes on May 4, 2025.
She was born in Connecticut on Oct. 6, 1940, to Allan B. and Helen Benner Smith. She grew up with her sister, Sandra, in Bristol and Mansfield, Conn.
Susie graduated from the University of Connecticut. She taught special education for many years in Massachusetts and Maine. She retired from Freeport Middle School. She enjoyed teaching and often said it never felt like work.
Susie was an educator, she loved to teach and learn and read. She was an avid collector. Music was in her heart. She played the piano, flute and guitar. She would entertain her nieces and nephews with made up silly songs. Susie had a wicked sense of humor and her favorite interactions included lots of laughter. She loved being outside, gardening, watching animals, and being entertained by bird song. Susie was very athletic, enjoying biking, tennis, and swimming. She and her sister enjoyed golfing together. Later in life, Susie earned a black belt.
Susie is survived by her three nieces and nephews of whom she was very proud, Benjamin F. Crehore IV, a retired naval officer, and his wife Ronabelle Mobe Crehore of Michigan, Kirsten Figueroa and her husband Douglas Birgfeld III of Gardiner, and Karen Thomas of Hallowell. She is also survived by four grandnieces and nephews, Bryce Thomas of Colorado, Emily Thomas of Michigan, Samuel Figueroa of North Carolina, and Daenerys Crehore of Michigan; a brother, Joseph A. MacDougald and his wife Lisa of Madison, Conn., a brother-in-law, Bruce DeWyk of Lakewood, Colo.; cousins in Maine, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Japan.
